Assistant Director, Undergraduate Global Engagement

Position Summary

The Assistant Director is an integral part of the Undergraduate Global Engagement team administering the increasing number of Columbia programs by developing and managing all aspects of assigned global programs. The incumbent advises students about all aspects of study abroad and also works closely with Columbia faculty, overseas program staff, and other relevant constituents to develop programming that enhances global awareness and competencies. This position reports to the Associate Dean, Center for Undergraduate Global Engagement.

Responsibilities

Advising and Program Management

• Acts as the primary contact for students, faculty, and other stakeholders for a portfolio of programs.
• Develops and delivers a full-range of information, advising, and support to applicants and students, from Columbia and non-Columbia schools.
• Collaborates with relevant parties to resolve student issues during all phases of participation including pre-departure, while onsite, and upon return.
• Works closely with the program directors to coordinate all aspects of the programs such as development and planning, updating program budgets, negotiating partner agreements, student outreach and recruitment, and admissions & enrollment management.
• Continually assesses programs to assure quality experiences that meet enrollment and financial targets. Develops plans for program sustainability and innovation.
• Cultivates relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders such as faculty, academic departments, and partners to understand current trends and to identify new opportunities.
• Participates in the support of and response to health, safety, and risk management issues that may arise with individual students or that may affect a program.
• Understands and aligns Columbia policies and procedures with the best practices of the global education community.
• Directs relevant program consortium boards or faculty committees including ongoing communications, follow-up, and board/committee meeting planning and preparations.
• Travels to Columbia program sites and partner programs to strengthen working relationships and identify new opportunities.

Program Development and Special Projects

• Contribute to the planning and development of existing and new programs.
• Provide expertise from the community of practice to faculty and program directors in the program development process.
• Develop projects that enhance the student experience.

Collaboration and Teamwork

• Participate in UGE and College working groups and committees.
• Represent UGE in on-campus and off-campus fairs, workshops, and activities to advise students about Columbia’s global engagement opportunities.
• Hold general study abroad advising sessions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required
• Two to four years of related experience required
• Familiarity with liberal arts college curricula and ability to work with faculty
• Excellent communication and presentation skills; demonstrated administrative and organizational skills
• Working knowledge of Google suite and Microsoft office required
• Possess the capacity to learn relevant administrative applications such as Studio Abroad, Salesforce, Qualtrics, Canvas, and Canva or InDesign
• Ability to work with minimum day-to-day supervision and as part of a team
• Must demonstrate strong independent judgment

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree preferred
• Strong preference for experience working with college students in one or more of the following areas: study abroad advising or program development and administration, academic advising, and/or supportive academic programs
• Knowledge of another language and culture is strongly desirable
