Education Abroad and Overseas Campuses serves as the central unit responsible for promoting and facilitating education abroad at Temple University. Education Abroad administers academic year, semester, and summer study abroad programs hosted by Temple’s overseas campuses in Rome, Italy; Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan; offered through exchange and other institutional partners around the globe, and developed and led by Temple faculty members. Enrolling and serving an average of 1,400 Temple and non-Temple students a year, the Education Abroad team is committed to providing transformative global learning experiences that prepare the diverse students from Temple and our U.S. partner institutions to develop as engaged global citizens, collective problem-solvers, and leaders in their chosen field.

Reporting to the Associate Director for Programming, the Assistant Director manages a small portfolio of study abroad programs including the advising, enrollment, support, preparation, and participation of those students; leads a consistent and inclusive approach to pre-departure education for study abroad across the program management team; assists with managing student incidents abroad; and serves as the primary staff member responsible for the pre-departure Canvas sites.

The Assistant Director manages the day-to-day operations of their assigned program(s), from recruitment, admissions, retention, pre-departure, student course registration, health and safety, and evaluation. They review applications for assigned programs and make admission decisions, manage the visa application processes for students, coordinate with administrators and faculty regarding curricular issues, processes, and track all pre-departure forms and documents, and guide students through the entire application and pre-departure processes. The Assistant Director is also involved in outreach and recruitment for program(s) managed. They identify and resolve problems related to their programs and students.

The Assistant Director supports the unit’s approach to pre-departure advising and preparation, and leads the implementation of the pre-departure process. In collaboration with the Associate Director, they design a comprehensive plan to prepare students with various needs to succeed while abroad, addressing travel and immigration, academic, language, and cultural issues, health, disability, and wellbeing, as well as issues related to race, gender, and identity, financial considerations, and more. The Assistant Director implements the approach across all programs and supports Program Managers in revising and updating materials regularly.

The Assistant Director provides additional support and assistance to the leadership of Education Abroad on higher-level tasks and responsibilities, and participates in promoting international education across the university and at partner institutions. The Assistant Director supervises the Enrollment Coordinator and may supervise student workers who support enrollment processes.
