Responsibilities

Policy Development, Review, and Implementation

  • Leads the collaborative development, implementation, and communication of policies, procedures, and programs to mitigate safety and security risks related to undergraduate and graduate student international travel. 

  • Interprets policies and makes recommendations for safety planning and compliance. 

  • Coordinates Manage and coordinate with relevant units on campus (Office of Risk, Ethics, and Compliance; Department of Global Engagement; International Student and Scholar Services; Student Affairs; as well as U.S. and international partners) to develop and maintain processes and policies related to risk mitigation, crisis management, emergency response, incident reporting, and student disclosures.

  • Serves as a key member on relevant campus committees as well as forming committees/working groups to facilitate collaboration across campus.

  • Coordinates and oversees the review of Education Abroad proposals with regards to safety, security, and risk.

  • Develops protocols for monitoring the political, economic, health, safety, and security conditions of locations abroad where students will travel.

  • Conducts regular daily monitoring of world events, prominent health and safety issues, and legal decisions affecting international programs in higher education and communicates updates as needed.

  • Serves as the Education Abroad point person for coordination of international travel insurance.

  • Prepares reports to evaluate trends and assess services.

  • Conducts international site visits upon request. 

Risk Assessment

  • Oversees proactive risk assessment and analysis for international programming initiatives for locations on system high or extreme lists.

  • Completes travel risk assessments and provides recommendations to the Director of Education Abroad, the Associate Vice President for Global Engagement, and the Vice President for Risk, Ethics, and Compliance.

  • Coordinates and communicates decisions on travel advisories and restrictions on travel and provides consultation to colleagues regarding destination risk assessment and safety planning.

  • Works with the appropriate stakeholders including the Office of Risk, Ethics, and Compliance; and Texas A&M University System offices to manage and review recommendations regarding individual travel requests to high-risk locations.

  • Monitors travel registrations and makes recommendations for enhancing travel safety as appropriate.

  • Develops and manages incident reports and statistics.

  • Provides leadership with annual reports related to scope of travel, risk assessments, and incidents.

Crisis Management

  • Reviews existing, and also creates general and specific emergency plans

  • Trains staff on the emergency response team within the office.

  • Develops and shares the 24/7/365 coverage plan for international emergencies.

  • Manages and coordinates the execution of emergency response protocols for outbound study abroad and international students on campus.

  • Collaborates with key stakeholders on and off campus to respond to student incidents overseas.

  • Liaises with the University’s international insurance and travel emergency service provider to triage situations and incidents.

Training and Outreach

  • Develops international risk and safety protocols and training for students and program leaders.

  • Coordinates and leads various workshops related to health, safety, and compliance.

  • Manages the university travel registration process and resources associated with international health and safety.

 

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Five years of relevant work experience, including at least three years of direct experience in higher education, international travel, 24/7 crisis management, risk management, global health, legal affairs, governmental or non-profit work, including demonstrated leadership ability in a complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters or professional degree.

  • Previous experience and progressively responsible experience in education abroad in higher education or with a study away program provider.

  • Experience coordinating across administrative units and working with university faculty and administration.

  • Significant international experience living, studying, or working abroad.

  • Experience in emergency response and protocols in higher education.
