Position Focus:

Reporting to the Director of Yale Study Abroad, the Senior Associate Director has a lead role in running all student-facing aspects of term-time and summer study abroad opportunities, both for Yale College’s programs abroad through Yale Summer Session (YSS) Programs Abroad and for non-Yale study abroad at approved sites around the world.

The Senior Associate Director provides expert leadership in managing all aspects of student health and safety and emergency management, including through proactively partnering with Yale’s Enterprise Risk Management Office and maintaining the Office of International and Summer Programs emergency protocols for incidents abroad; operates as the lead “super user” for Yale Compass (Terra Dotta / Studio Abroad), which is the mechanism by which Yale Study Abroad processes 1,000+ study abroad applications each year and which provides the data necessary to report on outcomes and to manage emergency incidents abroad; supervises the full-time Program Coordinator for YSS Programs Abroad, with a focus on ensuring the smooth, timely, and accurate management of processes related to student applications and budget reconciliation for YSS Programs Abroad; implements student-facing synergies between Yale Study Abroad and myriad other units, including the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), the Cultural Centers, and the Residential Colleges, among others.

Furthermore, the Senior Associate Director provides expert academic and other advising to students on study abroad opportunities, both term-time and summer; determines what impact a proposed course of study abroad will have upon the student’s major and distribution requirements and other academic requirements to maintain academic good standing in and to graduate from Yale College; makes a final determination on the suitability of sites and courses for Yale College credit, i.e., whether an institution and specific courses meet Yale University standards and Yale College requirements; develops and maintains in-depth knowledge of existing study abroad opportunities for Yale College students and seeks to create new opportunities; conducts risk management assessments of potential study abroad sites and negotiates changes to offerings with host institutions; assesses the quality of instruction and academic and student services offered by host institutions; generates short- and long-term strategies for study abroad; develops and executes a student recruitment strategy for study abroad in collaboration with the study abroad team, academic departments, the residential colleges, and other campus partners and with partner institutions; develops overall program assessment criteria and conducts periodic reviews of study abroad programs; analyzes and evaluates results to inform long- and short-term strategic planning; recommends and implements programmatic changes as necessary; counsels students on the processes for seeking funding for study abroad opportunities; communicates to students specific cultural imperatives for each study abroad location; maintains data related to study abroad and assists in the development and dissemination of quantitative and qualitative reports; assists in all aspects of maintenance and development of Web resources related to study abroad; develops marketing and promotion materials and designs; develops and leads study abroad information meetings; maintains a professional presence, stays current in the field, and participates in national study abroad meetings and regional conferences; trains and supervises student workers on any related work; and supports Yale University’s sustainability strategic plan, the Green Workplace.

Essential Duties

1. Plans and executes admission, financial aid, internship, and career services programs. Prepares and submits recommendations to admissions and financial aid committees. Plans and cultivates new corporate relationships to generate job opportunities both domestically and internationally. 2. Participates in long-range planning; recommends and contributes to the development of career services, financial aid, and admissions policies. 3. Provides guidance, advices and counseling on academic, admissions, financial , and career services matters to students and prospective students. Works with students, alumni and employers to identify existing and emerging employment opportunities. 4. Develops and analyzes statistical data to determine patterns and trends that impact and inform the direction of the admissions or financial aid. Conducts ongoing research on employment trends and evolving industry-specific recruiting and talent management needs. 5. Develops budgets and loan repayment schedules. 6. Develops systems for admissions and financial aid activities. Leads projects to continuously improve use of technology. 7. Writes publications to inform students of developments within financial aid and admissions offices. 8. Organizes and conducts corporate presentations, networking nights, and career fairs. Guide employers in developing and executing on-and off campus strategies for attracting University talent. 9. Supervises and trains a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and five years of experience in a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Outstanding advising, writing, and public speaking skills. Proficiency with general computer software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and “super user” ability with the Yale Compass (Terra Dotta / Studio Abroad) application (or similar) software platform.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through tasks to completion.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive materials.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proven ability to handle accurately, consistently and dependably many projects with little supervision in a pressured and deadline-oriented environment.

Ability to travel to perform site visits. Ability to work with a diverse student population.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master's Degree in a relevant field. Six or more years of experience working in the field of international education, including a focus on student health and safety matters. Proven experience managing professional staff. Proven experience living or studying abroad.
