Study Abroad and Exchange Advisor

The UNM Global Education Office (GEO) Education Abroad unit is seeking applications for a full-time Study Abroad and Exchange Advisor. This position advises students about study abroad and student exchange, by selecting and preparing students for the experience, and by maintaining close working relationships with exchange partners and program providers overseas. The position manages a large portfolio including, but not limited to, bilateral exchanges, study abroad programs, faculty-led programs, national exchange and will manage other projects as assigned. The position is expected to further the strategic goals and mission of The University of New Mexico and to contribute to the University's and GEO’s diversity and Generation Study Abroad goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and facilitate portfolio of inbound/outbound study abroad programs and exchanges as assigned. Make recommendations to the director regarding changes or adjustments to programs. Meet/communicate with staff from program providers and exchange/institutional partners to help develop a good working relationship.
  • Facilitate program logistics, website updates, advertising/marketing of programs, recruiting of students, and application review/selection of students.
  • Serve as the assigned regional expert and stay up-to-date on new program information, health and safety issues, and work collaboratively with other members of the EA/GEO team.
  • Advise students about opportunities for exchange/study abroad by meeting individually with them to determine their interests, qualifications, needs, and assess their academic and linguistic qualifications and personal goals; identify problems and resolve them. Advise students about academic and cultural aspects of the county where they will study, health and safety preparations, academic advising, financial aid, transfer credit policies, etc.
  • Process exchange/study abroad transfer credits and meet with students during post-program debriefings for selected programs.
  • Help coordinate check-ins and orientation events for international exchange students.
  • Maintain program information on website and in ViaTRM as needed.
  • Help students coordinate the academic side of their study abroad experience as it relates to course approvals and communicate course evaluation decisions to students. Act as a resource to Academic Advisors and Faculty about programs.
  • Liaise as necessary with various departments on campus to recruit supporters and students for the programs and facilitate administrative activities.
  • Handle questions from students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Work with the health, safety team in dealing with emergencies.
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise student employees.

Passport Center Support and Other Duties as Assigned

  • Serve as backup passport agent for the UNM Passport Center as needed
  • Report to UNM Passport Center to cover shifts as requested
  • Maintain US Passport Agent annual certification
